What is the Home Start Garden
The garden at the Institute of Public Scholarship is more than a place to grow food, it is a culturally grounded community space centered around healing, environmental and land stewardship, historical awareness, and connection to the land. Through the Ampersee Home Start Initiative and community garden efforts, the garden creates opportunities for residents and community members to engage in food sovereignty, collective care, communal assets, and hands on learning rooted in the histories and experiences of Black, Brown, and Native communities. The work intentionally acknowledges the layered history of the land while creating restorative and sustainable spaces for the future. By looking 100 years back in order to build a sustainable 100 years forward, the garden encourages communities to learn from ancestral practices, environmental knowledge, and collective care models that have sustained people for generations. From planting parties and educational gatherings to growing fresh produce for the community, the garden encourages people to reconnect not only with nature, but with culture, story, ancestry, and one another. The Institute’s work also focuses on preserving cultural and historical narratives while advancing environmental justice, community wellness, equitable access to sustainable resources, and the strengthening of shared community assets for future generations.
