Archival Internship at IPS This internship is designed to give undergraduate students an opportunity to gain experience at IPS’s cultural and historic sites on the East side of Kalamazoo. Experiences will include procuring, arranging, and cataloging sites’ collections including photographs, furniture, documents, artifacts, and artwork using professional standards. The intern will also assist in the development of finding aides for site collections. Applicants must have a historical background and an educational emphasis on archival administration or curation is preferred.
Museum Operations Internship at IPS This internship is designed to give undergraduate students who have a passion for History and enjoy interacting with children and adults while helping them learn in a fun and exciting environment, an opportunity to gain experience at IPS’s community museum. The ideal candidate will also have an opportunity to learn about interpretation, education, museum administration, volunteer management, event planning and social media & marketing.
Processing Internship at IPS IPS has a goal of partnering with the Kalamazoo Public Library to make the archival records of BIPOC people available to the BIPOC public in the neighborhoods in which they live. This rich collection of material will be of great research value to the local BIPOC history and genealogy community. Interns and volunteers will work to rebox and refolder materials, and create a finding aid in digital format for the collections.
Technical Writing Intern/Volunteer at IPS Each of our collections needs a descriptive historical/biographical sketch to guide researchers. These sketches are normally 200-1000 words in length, and we seek volunteers/interns to research and write these important descriptive notes for our collections. As well, Tech writing interns may assist the drafting of signage/panels that relay the layered history of specified sites. This is a great way to put your research and writing skills to work.
Digital Projects Internship at IPS We do / will have a number of digital projects at IPS. One of these involves mapping the names of early Black business owners in Kalamazoo to create a map database of where these individuals lived and where their business stood across Kalamazoo. Other projects could involve creating digital timelines, digitizing data or oral testimonies, creating digital markers and monuments, and developing other digital ways to engage history.
Non-Profit Management Internship at IPS This internship is designed for the undergraduate student who wants to learn all aspects of managing a community centered non-profit. It will afford the intern an opportunity to learn about how a non-profit secures funding. It will provide an inside look at the day to day operations of IPS as well as the strategic decision making inherent in the responsibilities of an Executive Director. This intern will offer support in the following areas: general office needs, board relations, public relations, fundraising, grant writing, awareness and advocacy.
