The Institute of Public Scholarship is a mission-driven nonprofit organization that operates at the intersection of education, public benefit, and social justice, with a commitment to building an informed and empowered society. Our work is rooted in the belief that knowledge, when shared across sectors and generations, can shift power, dismantle barriers, and foster change.

Our vision is to elevate historically excluded voices by cultivating environments where young people, creatives, scholars, and community leaders co-create new narratives for justice and liberation. By developing programs that blend the humanities, arts, sciences, and environmental stewardship, we seek to empower youth and adult learners to reclaim agency over their stories, health, and futures. The Institute of Public Scholarship is not just preparing participants to thrive within existing systems; we are supporting them in reimagining what those systems can become.

Transform your impact on the community

Your donation to the Institute of Public Scholarship will have a tangible and transformative impact on elevating marginalized voices in several key ways:

  • Amplifying Community Voices Through Public Scholarship: Your support helps fund collaborative research and storytelling initiatives—such as staged readings, oral history projects, and panel discussions—that center the lived experiences of historically marginalized individuals. For example, the “Reclamation & Testimony” event brought real stories of homelessness and housing insecurity to the stage, empowering those affected to share their narratives and influence community dialogue and policy.
  • Supporting Youth and Intergenerational Learning: Donations enable programs like the Young Scholars Youth Development Program, which fosters critical thinking, creativity, and self-awareness among young people, while also encouraging intergenerational knowledge-sharing. These initiatives help youth and adult learners reclaim agency over their stories, health, and futures.
  • Bridging Academic Research and Grassroots Activism: Your contribution supports efforts to make research accessible and actionable, ensuring that knowledge generated by and for marginalized communities is used to advocate for justice, wellness, and environmental equity. Projects such as community-led air-quality monitoring equip residents with the data and tools needed to advocate for healthier environments.
  • Preserving and Celebrating Cultural Narratives: Funding helps sustain platforms like the Artist Production Fellowship, Art of Fact, and Sounds of Our Stories, which uplift the work of artists, historians, and scholars working to reclaim and preserve cultural heritage. These programs ensure that art and history serve as tools for healing, empowerment, and education.
  • Creating Inclusive Community Spaces: Donations help maintain and program spaces like Legacy: Cultural Wellness on North Burdick, which serves as a gathering place for storytelling events, arts programs, and wellness initiatives. These spaces honor the history of local communities while providing opportunities for residents to reclaim, celebrate, and continue their cultural legacy.
  • Driving Policy Change and Advocacy: By supporting community-driven initiatives and advisory teams composed of those with lived experience, your donation contributes to ongoing advocacy for equitable housing, wellness, and systemic change.
In all these ways, your generosity directly enables the Institute to elevate historically excluded voices, foster new narratives for justice and liberation, and transform research and storytelling into real-world impact.work
