X: A Novel - The 2017-18 Great Michigan Read, X: A Novel by Ilyasah Al Shabazz and Kekla Magoon explores the Michigan roots of Malcolm X, including the early life experiences, both good and bad, that molded him into one of the most prominent leaders of the twentieth century. In this presentation, Dr. Michelle Johnson situates Malcom X and the novel at the center of Black cultural experiences in Michigan from 1860-1948. In particular, she explores connections between Michigan and Caribbean countries, labor, class, poverty, race and gender using Malcolm X’s story.
